Leptosphaeria leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Leptosphaeria veronicae. It specifically targets various species within the Veronica genus, affecting their foliage and leading to decreased photosynthetic efficiency. This pathogen is classified as an ascomycete and can significantly impact the health and aesthetic value of ornamental garden plants.
The host range of this fungus is primarily restricted to plants of the genus Veronica. It is frequently observed in nursery settings and home gardens where humidity levels remain high for extended periods. The fungus survives unfavorable seasons within infected plant debris, acting as a primary reservoir for the following year's infection cycle.
Symptoms initially appear as small, scattered spots on the leaves. As the infection progresses, these spots often enlarge and develop distinct margins. The center of the lesions may turn tan or grayish, eventually becoming necrotic. Tiny, black, pin-point structures known as pycnidia emerge on the leaf surface, which serve as the reproductive units of the fungus.
