Description
The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Leptosphaerulina australis, an ascomycete pathogen known for its ability to affect various plant species. It exists as both a necrotrophic parasite and a saprotroph, allowing it to survive on crop debris during off-seasons. The fungus completes its cycle by producing pseudothecia, from which ascospores are released to initiate primary infections on healthy hosts.
This pathogen impacts a wide range of agricultural crops, with a particular focus on legumes such as alfalfa and clover, as well as several species of turfgrass. The fungus primarily targets the leaves and petioles, leading to structural damage that can compromise the overall health and vigor of the plant. It is considered an opportunistic pathogen that often colonizes stressed or aging plant tissues.
The symptoms of Leptosphaerulina australis typically appear as foliar spots that progress into generalized necrosis. Key visual indicators include:
- small, irregular tan or gray lesions on the leaf surface;
- dark margins surrounding the infected spots;
- yellowing (chlorosis) of leaves followed by tissue death;
- development of tiny, dark fruiting bodies on dead leaf tissue.
Development and spread of the fungus are highly dependent on moisture and temperature. Extended periods of high humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures provide the ideal environment for the liberation and germination of spores. Water splashes and wind serve as the primary mechanisms for dispersing the fungus throughout a field or lawn, especially in dense plant populations.
Economic damage is caused by the reduction of photosynthetic area, which leads to lower yields and reduced forage quality. Management strategies focus on improving air circulation to reduce canopy humidity, proper fertilization to maintain plant vigor, and the use of resistant varieties. In cases of significant infestation, chemical control with appropriate fungicides may be necessary, complemented by the removal of infected crop residue to reduce the inoculum load.
