Leptosporomyces infection is a fungal disease caused by species within the Leptosporomyces genus. As basidiomycete fungi, they often function as saprotrophs but can behave as opportunistic pathogens, colonizing weakened woody tissues. These fungi are characterized by the development of thin, inconspicuous resupinate fruiting bodies on the bark of trees and shrubs.

The fungus primarily targets various forest tree species, ornamental plants, and in certain conditions, fruit trees. It is particularly prevalent in specimens that have suffered structural damage, such as frost cracks, sunburns, or mechanical injuries. Such vulnerabilities allow the fungus to establish itself and begin the decay process within the wood.

The symptoms of this infection are typically manifested as a whitish to cream-colored thin layer or patch forming on the bark surface. As the infection progresses, the underlying bark layers begin to necroticize, leading to branch dieback. Affected wood often shows discoloration and structural softening, which are clear indicators of internal decay and compromised vascular health.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Leptosporomyces. High humidity levels and mild temperatures provide the perfect microclimate for the expansion of mycelium. Spores are primarily disseminated through wind currents, though human intervention, such as the use of unsterilized pruning shears, is a significant vector for spreading the pathogen between plants.

The economic and aesthetic damage caused by this fungus includes premature canopy thinning, branch death, and in severe cases, the eventual loss of the entire plant. Effective management involves a combination of cultural and chemical strategies:

  • Pruning and removing infected branches during the dormant season.
  • Ensuring proper air circulation within the plant canopy.
  • Disinfecting all pruning tools between plants to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Applying copper-based fungicidal sprays to protect vulnerable bark areas.
