Leptothyrium theae is a fungal pathogen responsible for causing a specific foliar disease known as leptothyriosis or tea leaf spot. This pathogen targets the leaves of the tea plant, disrupting their normal physiological functions and leading to economic losses due to decreased yield and poor quality of the harvested leaf material.
The fungus primarily affects the tea plant (Camellia sinensis). While it is more frequently observed on older leaves, it can spread to younger foliage under favorable conditions. The disease is characterized by the formation of distinct spots on the leaf surface, which can vary in color from light brown to dark necrotic patches.
A key diagnostic feature of this disease is the development of pycnidia, appearing as small, black, dot-like structures within the necrotic leaf tissue. These structures serve as the fruiting bodies where the fungus produces its spores, which are subsequently released and spread by wind, splashing rain, or contaminated tools.

High relative humidity, consistent rainfall, and stagnant air within dense plantations are the primary factors that facilitate fungal colonization. Poor site drainage further exacerbates the vulnerability of the plants to this infection.
