Sooty mold, caused by the fungus Leptoxyphium fumago, is a common fungal condition that manifests as a dark, charcoal-like layer on the surface of plant parts. Unlike parasitic fungi, this organism does not invade plant tissues but colonizes the sticky honeydew secreted by sap-sucking insects such as aphids, scale insects, and whiteflies.

A wide variety of plants are susceptible to this infection, including fruit trees, shrubs, ornamental plants, and various greenhouse crops. The presence of the fungus is almost always an indicator of a heavy infestation of insects that leave behind sugary residues on leaves and stems.

The primary symptom is the development of a black, soot-like film covering the leaves, twigs, and sometimes fruit. While the mold itself is superficial, its impact is harmful because it creates a barrier that blocks sunlight and interferes with photosynthesis, which is essential for the plant's growth and survival.

The development of Leptoxyphium fumago is favored by conditions of high humidity and poor airflow within the plant canopy. If left untreated, the mold can cover large areas of the plant, weakening it significantly and reducing its vigor, which leads to stunted growth and reduced yields in commercial fruit production.
