Description
Lessonia (lat. Lessonia) is a pathogenic organism that causes fungal infection in plant tissues. In agricultural practice, this object is classified as a pathogen of a mycotic disease that can cause significant economic damage if agronomic regulations are violated in both indoor and outdoor growing environments.
The causative agent of the disease is a microscopic fungus that penetrates the plant's vascular system. The infection is transmitted through contaminated substrate, poor-quality planting material, or contact with tools. The colonization process usually begins at the root neck, after which the pathogen quickly spreads through the xylem, blocking the transport of water and nutrients.
The main symptoms of the lesion are chlorosis of the lower leaves, gradual wilting of the apical shoots, and characteristic browning of the vascular bundles on the stem cross-section. In the later stages of the disease, a specific fungal growth may appear on the surface of the affected areas, indicating the active sporulation of the pathogen.
The development of Lessonia is favored by high soil humidity, lack of proper drainage, and significant temperature fluctuations. Favorable conditions for the spread of spores occur when water stagnation happens, which promotes root rot and weakens the plant's natural immunity. Inadequate aeration of the substrate significantly accelerates the plant death process.
To prevent the spread of the infection, the following measures are recommended:
- Use of certified, healthy planting material.
- Regular disinfection of soil mixtures and agricultural equipment.
- Maintaining an optimal watering schedule without overwatering.
- Preventive treatments with biological fungicides during high-risk periods.
- Prompt removal and destruction of severely affected plants to eliminate the source of infection.
