Wolf lichen (Letharia vulpina) is a conspicuous, bright yellow-green fruticose lichen species that grows primarily on the bark of coniferous trees. In the context of arboriculture and forestry, it is often misidentified as a parasitic disease, though it is technically an epiphyte that does not derive nutrients directly from the host tree.

The lichen contains vulpinic acid, a compound known for its toxic properties. This chemical gives the organism its characteristic vibrant color and serves as a natural deterrent against many herbivores, allowing the lichen to thrive undisturbed on the surfaces of trunks and branches of various evergreen species like pine and fir.

Development typically occurs in regions with cool, humid climates and pristine air quality. Since it is highly sensitive to pollutants, its presence is often considered a bioindicator of healthy, clean air. It favors the rough, mature bark of older trees that provide a stable, long-term substrate for colonization.

While the lichen is not a pathogen, excessive colonization can cause micro-environmental changes on the bark. The dense thalli can trap excessive moisture, potentially creating a conducive environment for wood-decay fungi, borers, and other pests that can eventually compromise the health of the host tree.

Preventive management focuses on tree vitality rather than eradication. Since the lichen colonizes weakened or slowly growing trees, the best protection is to promote vigorous growth through proper irrigation, fertilization, and site management. Mechanical removal is possible, but it must be performed with caution using soft tools to ensure the integrity of the protective bark layers remains intact.
