Letrouitia is a genus of crustose lichens belonging to the family Letrouitiaceae. While they are often misidentified as diseases by non-specialists, they are physiologically classified as epiphytes. These organisms inhabit the bark of various trees, using the plant surface solely for attachment and physical support rather than nutrient extraction or parasitic invasion.
The biology of Letrouitia involves a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and an alga. These lichens do not cause tissue necrosis; however, they thrive in specific environments, often colonizing trees that exhibit slow bark development or decreased physiological vitality. Their presence is frequently a bioindicator of specific environmental humidity levels.
Development and spread are facilitated by prolonged high humidity, poor air circulation, and deep shade within the orchard canopy. When the density of the canopy prevents proper sunlight penetration, the bark surface remains moist for extended periods, providing an ideal substrate for the colonization of these lichen spores.
The primary agricultural harm of Letrouitia is indirect. The thick, spongy structure of the lichen provides a protective microhabitat for various pests, such as scale insects, and can serve as a reservoir for fungal spores that cause actual plant diseases. This can lead to increased pest pressure and secondary infections if left unmanaged.
Management strategies focus on improving the overall health of the tree to ensure rapid bark turnover and an unfavorable environment for colonization. Key practices include systematic crown thinning to increase light penetration, mechanical cleaning of the bark, and maintaining high vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation programs to minimize the suitability of the substrate for epiphyte growth.
