White dapperling (genus Leucoagaricus) consists of fungi that, while typically saprophytic, can pose challenges in intensive agricultural production. These fungi thrive in environments rich in organic matter, making them common inhabitants of greenhouse substrates and potting mixes, where they can interfere with normal plant development.
The causative agent is the fungal mycelium, which colonizes the growing medium. The type of impact is primarily competitive, as the fungi utilize available nutrients intended for the host plants. In agricultural terms, it is considered an indicator of poor hygiene in soil management or an imbalance in the substrate's organic composition.
These fungi mainly affect greenhouse crops, including vegetables, herbs, and ornamental plants grown in containers. They are particularly prevalent in systems using high-peat or high-compost media, especially when irrigation management is inadequate and the substrate remains consistently damp, preventing proper oxygenation of the roots.
Symptoms include the emergence of white fruiting bodies (mushrooms) on the soil surface and the development of dense white mycelial mats. Affected plants often exhibit signs of nutrient deficiency, such as yellowing leaves and stunted growth, resulting from the competitive consumption of minerals and water by the fungal network.
Effective management and prevention strategies include:
- Sterilizing all potting media and substrates before planting.
- Optimizing irrigation schedules to allow the soil surface to dry between waterings.
- Improving greenhouse ventilation and air circulation to reduce humidity.
- Physically removing any visible fruiting bodies before they release spores.
- Using systemic fungicides if the substrate infestation significantly impacts plant vigor.
