Leucogaster citrinus is a species of sequestrate fungi belonging to the family Albatrellaceae. While many species in this genus function as ectomycorrhizal partners, Leucogaster citrinus is often studied in the context of its association with root systems and its potential role in accelerating the decay of weakened or stressed trees in forest environments.
The pathogen is characterized by its hypogeous (subterranean) fruiting bodies, which appear as yellowish, fleshy structures. Its biological cycle is closely tied to the soil moisture and the presence of organic debris, where it can survive as a saprotroph before colonizing the living roots of host trees during periods of reduced tree vigor.
Host plants primarily include coniferous species. The infection process involves the colonization of the fine root tips, which disrupts the tree's ability to absorb water and essential nutrients. This nutritional stress often manifests as chlorosis or stunted growth, eventually leading to secondary infections by other forest pathogens.
Symptoms of infestation are often subtle until significant damage has occurred. Early signs include reduced shoot growth and yellowing of the foliage. The definitive diagnosis requires an examination of the soil around the root collar, where the distinctive citrine-yellow fruiting bodies of the fungus may be found.
Control strategies focus primarily on silvicultural practices rather than chemical treatments. Promoting forest health through adequate thinning, avoiding soil compaction, and protecting the root systems of mature trees during logging are the most effective ways to mitigate the spread of this fungus. Maintaining a healthy balance of soil microbiota remains the best prevention method.
