Description
Leveillula clavata is a specialized fungal pathogen known to cause a distinct type of powdery mildew. Unlike surface-growing mildews, this fungus exhibits an endophytic habit, meaning its mycelium colonizes the internal tissues of the host plant, emerging only through the stomata to produce asexual spores (conidia).
This pathogen has a wide host range, primarily infecting species within the Solanaceae and Asteraceae families. It poses a significant challenge in both open-field agriculture and greenhouse environments, particularly in warmer climatic zones where high humidity and temperature fluctuations facilitate its rapid reproduction.
The primary symptoms include the development of chlorotic spots on the upper leaf surface, which eventually turn necrotic. On the underside of the leaves, a sparse grayish spore layer may appear under high humidity. Because the mycelium resides internally, symptoms are often mistaken for nutrient deficiencies or viral infections during early stages.
The development and spread of Leveillula clavata are strongly favored by warm weather conditions, typically ranging from 20°C to 30°C. Since the spores are wind-dispersed, the fungus can rapidly colonize entire crops within a short timeframe if the microclimate remains conducive to infection and environmental controls are absent.
To effectively manage and prevent the spread of this pathogen, integrated pest management (IPM) is essential. Strategies should focus on the use of resistant varieties, maintaining optimal plant spacing to promote air circulation, and consistent monitoring of crop health. Fungicidal applications involving sulfur-based products or systemic triazoles are generally recommended when environmental conditions favor disease pressure.
