Description

Pathogen and disease type. Leveillula cylindrospora is a fungal pathogen belonging to the Erysiphales order, which causes powdery mildew. Unlike typical powdery mildew fungi that grow strictly on the surface of plant tissues, this fungus is endophytal. It penetrates the host plant through stomata and develops its mycelium within the leaf mesophyll, which complicates standard contact fungicide treatments.

Crops and economic impact. This pathogen primarily infects plants within the Asteraceae family. Its economic impact is significant as it disrupts photosynthesis, leads to premature leaf senescence, and results in severe defoliation. In commercial settings, heavy infection levels can lead to a drastic reduction in crop quality, yield volume, and market value.

Symptoms and signs. The initial visual symptoms include chlorotic spotting on the adaxial (top) side of the leaves. As the disease advances, a distinct white or grayish powdery growth—the conidial stage—appears on the abaxial (bottom) side of the leaves. In advanced stages, the foliage yellows, curls, and eventually dries out, leading to significant physiological stress for the plant.

Conditions for development. The fungus thrives in warm climates and is particularly aggressive under fluctuating temperatures. The conidia are easily dispersed by wind, allowing the disease to spread rapidly throughout a field or greenhouse. Warm, dry days followed by humid nights are often sufficient to trigger significant disease progression and secondary infections.

Control and prevention measures. Managing Leveillula cylindrospora requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to be effective:

  • Regular removal and destruction of crop debris to eliminate inoculum sources.
  • Weed management to remove alternate host plants from the field borders.
  • Deployment of resistant cultivars when available.
  • Application of systemic fungicides capable of penetrating leaf tissues to target internal mycelium.
  • Implementation of crop rotation cycles to break the fungal life cycle.
