Lichenomphalia is a genus of basidiomycete fungi that form symbiotic associations with algae, resulting in the development of lichens. In an agronomic context, while these organisms are not direct plant pathogens like typical blights, they are often associated with the decline of woody perennials. Their colonization of tree trunks is a classic sign of environmental stress and stagnant growth conditions.
These fungi typically affect fruit and ornamental trees that are already weakened by poor soil conditions, overcrowding, or high environmental humidity. By colonizing the bark, the lichen forms a dense mat that can impede the bark's natural respiration process and provide a refuge for sap-sucking insects and other latent fungal pathogens.
The primary symptoms are the appearance of green or grayish crusty or scale-like structures on the bark. When the growth becomes excessive, it covers large areas of the trunk, leading to bark degradation, premature cracking, and a visible reduction in the overall vigor of the host plant as the tree's vitality decreases over time.
Development is driven by prolonged exposure to moisture, low light levels, and lack of air circulation within the canopy. Gardens with poor drainage or high ambient humidity are particularly susceptible. The presence of these organisms is a clear indicator that the tree is not maintaining its bark tissue in a healthy, shedding state.
Protective measures include improving cultural practices: regular pruning to enhance air movement, balanced fertilization to support host immunity, and mechanical scraping of the bark. Application of copper-based fungicides during the dormant season is a standard industry practice to eradicate and prevent further colonization of Lichenomphalia on woody surfaces.
