The biological nature of Lichina confinis is defined by a symbiotic association between a fungus (ascomycete) and a cyanobacterium (typically Calothrix). It survives in the harsh conditions of the littoral zone, where it endures rhythmic cycles of submergence in saline water and exposure to air, salt spray, and intense light.
