Description

The family Lichinaceae belongs to a group of lichens characterized by a symbiotic relationship between fungi and cyanobacteria. It is a common misconception to categorize them as a plant disease. In reality, these organisms serve as ecological markers rather than pathogens that negatively affect agricultural productivity or crop health.

These lichens thrive in specific environmental niches, such as exposed soil surfaces, rocky outcrops, or calcareous substrates. Unlike plant-pathogenic fungi, they do not possess the biological mechanisms to invade plant tissues, consume plant nutrients, or secrete toxic substances that would inhibit crop development.

Symptoms of their presence are usually seen as dark, crust-like patches on the soil surface. These formations are often confused with soil-borne infections by inexperienced observers; however, they remain localized and do not spread systemically through the vascular system of crops. They are entirely external and do not interact with the host metabolism.

The development of Lichinaceae is strictly limited by micro-climatic factors, primarily high light intensity and soil stability. They cannot colonize areas under intensive cultivation, as frequent soil disturbances, such as plowing, harrowing, or fertilization, destroy the necessary habitat for their survival.

There is no need for protective measures, fungicides, or any other control strategy regarding this family. They do not represent an economic threat to farmers. Instead, they provide ecological benefits, such as contributing to soil structure stabilization and atmospheric nitrogen fixation in non-disturbed areas surrounding agricultural lands.
