Lichtheimia is a genus of fungi within the order Mucorales. In agricultural phytopathology, these fungi are recognized as aggressive opportunistic pathogens responsible for significant losses in post-harvest storage. Unlike common field pathogens, they are characterized by rapid mycelial growth and massive sporulation, making them a serious threat to harvested produce.

The disease caused by this fungus is typically manifested as mucor rot (or soft rot). The pathogen secretes enzymes that break down plant cell walls, leading to rapid tissue liquefaction. The macroscopic symptom is a dense, fuzzy growth of mycelium, initially white, which eventually turns gray or brown as the pathogen produces sporangia containing thousands of spores.

A variety of crops are susceptible to Lichtheimia, particularly those with high moisture and sugar content. Tomatoes, strawberries, stone fruits, and various root vegetables are common hosts. The pathogen usually enters the plant tissue through wounds, bruises, or cracks created during harvesting, sorting, or by insect vectors, which serves as a critical entry point for infection.

Environmental conditions are the primary drivers of Lichtheimia development. The fungus thrives in environments with high relative humidity (typically above 85%) and moderate to warm temperatures. In storage facilities, poor air circulation creates pockets of microclimates that allow the fungus to proliferate, causing "nest-like" infection patterns where the disease spreads from one central infected item to those in direct contact.

Management and prevention strategies focus on limiting the pathogen's ability to colonize host tissues:

  • Maintaining optimal storage conditions with low humidity and high-efficiency air circulation.
  • Strict sanitation protocols for storage facilities and transportation equipment.
  • Reducing mechanical stress and skin damage during harvesting and packing.
  • Implementing regular inspections to remove symptomatic produce before the disease spreads.
  • Utilizing post-harvest biocontrol agents or approved fungicides where applicable.
