Lichtheimia corymbifera is a filamentous fungus belonging to the order Mucorales. In agricultural terms, it is recognized as a significant storage and soil-borne pathogen. While often saprophytic in nature, it easily switches to a parasitic mode, especially when host tissues are physiologically stressed or damaged, leading to rapid decay and loss of quality in agricultural products.

The fungus has a broad host range, affecting various grain, oilseed, and vegetable crops. It is particularly notorious for causing seed rot and seedling blight, which can lead to significant crop stand depletion in the field. Additionally, it causes severe post-harvest losses by colonizing stored grains and fruits, turning them into a mass of decayed organic matter contaminated with fungal spores.

Symptoms are primarily characterized by the rapid development of fluffy, light-colored mycelium that eventually darkens as sporulation occurs. Infected tissues exhibit soft rot, becoming mushy and discolored. In grains, the presence of the fungus often results in a musty odor and visible greyish-white mold growth that permeates the seed mass, rendering the batch unfit for processing or sowing.

The development of L. corymbifera is heavily dependent on microclimatic conditions. High ambient humidity (above 80%) and temperatures ranging between 25°C and 40°C create an ideal environment for explosive growth. The fungus spreads via airborne sporangiospores, which are highly resilient and can persist in soil or debris for extended periods, waiting for suitable environmental triggers to initiate infection.

Effective management requires an integrated approach focusing on prevention and environmental control:

  • Maintaining seed moisture content below 14% during long-term storage.
  • Ensuring proper aeration and climate control in grain storage facilities.
  • Treating seeds with appropriate fungicides to prevent early-stage infection.
  • Implementing strict sanitation programs for storage bins and harvesting equipment to reduce initial inoculum.
