Linospora leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by the ascomycete Linospora ceuthocarpa. This pathogen specifically targets trees of the genus Alnus (alder). While it is common in natural forest ecosystems, it can significantly impact tree vigor when environmental conditions favor the rapid spread of the fungus.
The visual symptoms of the disease appear as distinct spots on the leaves. As the fungus matures, small, black, eruptive structures known as perithecia develop within these spots. These structures contain the fungal spores, which are released to spread the infection to adjacent leaves or healthy trees within the stand.
