Lobaria virens is a large, leafy epiphytic lichen belonging to the Peltigeraceae family. It is strictly not a plant disease or a parasite, although it is often mistaken for one by those unfamiliar with forest biology. This organism relies on the bark of mature trees for physical support only, extracting no nutrients from the host plant's tissues.

The biology of this species is defined by a complex symbiosis between a fungus and cyanobacteria of the Nostoc genus. This partnership allows the lichen to fix atmospheric nitrogen, contributing to the natural nutrient cycle within forest ecosystems. It acts as a passive contributor to the local environment rather than an active pathogen.

Environmental requirements for Lobaria virens include high humidity, clean air, and long-term stability of the canopy. It is highly intolerant to sulfur dioxide, heavy metals, and the drift of agricultural pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. Because of its extreme sensitivity, it serves as a critical bioindicator of ecosystem health and purity.

Signs of its presence are characterized by extensive, lobed, greenish thalli growing on the bark of older broad-leaved trees like oaks and beeches. Unlike harmful fungi that cause decay or necrosis, this lichen does not penetrate the cambium or cause structural damage, leaving the host tree entirely healthy.

There is no need for protective measures against this organism in agriculture, as it poses no threat to crops. Instead, conservation efforts are centered on protecting its habitat from pollution and clear-cutting. Any application of fungicides or heavy chemical treatments in its vicinity will inevitably lead to its local extinction, which serves as an early warning of environmental degradation.
