Lophiostoma is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Pleosporales, which can cause significant issues for various plants under specific conditions. As a plant disease, it acts primarily as a saprotroph or a weak parasite that exploits weakened host tissues. While it often colonizes dead matter, in instances of severe plant stress, it can exacerbate damage to living tissues, impacting overall plant health and vigor.
This pathogen commonly affects a wide array of woody plants, shrubs, and certain agricultural crops such as grapevines. It is particularly prevalent in orchards and vineyards where plants may have sustained mechanical injury, freeze-thaw damage, or damage from previous pest infestations. The fungus finds its way into the plant system through these vulnerable points, establishing itself in the bark and outer layers.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the appearance of small, dark, raised fruiting bodies known as perithecia on the surface of the bark or on dead stems. This is often accompanied by tissue discoloration, localized necrosis, and the formation of small lesions or cankers. In chronic cases, the affected area may show signs of splitting, which further weakens the structural integrity of the affected shoot or branch.
The development and spread of Lophiostoma are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and mild temperatures. Rain splash and wind are the primary vectors for spore dispersal, carrying the fungus from infected debris to healthy plant parts. These conditions are most common during the dormant season, in autumn, and during rainy springs, making these times critical for monitoring.
Managing the disease requires an integrated approach to plant health. Key control measures include the regular removal of infected twigs and branches during pruning, which should be followed by the application of copper-based fungicides to protect open wounds. Ensuring proper plant nutrition and avoiding physical stress are essential for building natural plant resistance against the colonization of this opportunistic pathogen.
