Lophiostoma caulium is a fungal pathogen that primarily affects the stems and stalks of various herbaceous plants. Classified within the Dothideomycetes class, it functions as a saprotroph that can opportunistically transition into a parasite, especially under conditions where the host plant's defenses are compromised.

The host range is diverse, including various species within the Brassicaceae and Asteraceae families, alongside several cereal and vegetable crops. It frequently colonizes dead or dying plant tissues, making its presence highly noticeable in fields where crop residues are left unmanaged after harvest, thereby increasing the soil's inoculum level.

The primary clinical signs of the disease are the formation of small, black, elongated pseudothecia scattered across the surface of stems and leaf petioles. As the infection progresses, the affected tissues may turn greyish-brown, lose structural integrity, and become prone to breakage, ultimately hindering nutrient transport throughout the plant.

Disease development is heavily influenced by environmental factors, particularly high humidity, persistent rainfall, and moderate temperatures, which facilitate the production and dissemination of spores. The fungus typically exploits micro-wounds or physiological vulnerabilities in the plant tissue to initiate successful infection.

Integrated pest management is the most effective approach to control. Key strategies include:

  • Rigorous removal or deep incorporation of crop residues into the soil.
  • Implementation of diverse crop rotations to disrupt the pathogen's lifecycle.
