Description

Lophium is a fungal disease caused by various species within the genus Lophium, most notably Lophium mytilinum. These fungi are classified as Ascomycetes. While they often exist as saprotrophs on dead organic matter, they can behave as opportunistic pathogens that compromise the health of conifers when the trees are already stressed or weakened.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are coniferous species, including spruce, pine, and fir. The disease typically manifests on needles and small twigs. It is most frequently encountered in forest nurseries, ornamental gardens, and young plantations where environmental stressors like drought, nutrient deficiency, or overcrowding reduce the natural resistance of the host plants.

Symptoms are identified by the emergence of distinct, narrow, black or dark-brown apothecia—the fruit bodies of the fungus—protruding through the needle epidermis. Infected needles typically turn brown or reddish-tan, dry out prematurely, and eventually drop from the branches. Severe infections can lead to significant needle loss and branch dieback.

The development and spread of Lophium are closely linked to high humidity and poor air circulation. Prolonged periods of damp weather, fog, and dense canopy cover create an ideal environment for spore production and germination. The fungus survives the winter as mycelium within the infected needle tissues, ready to spread again when favorable conditions return.

Control measures primarily focus on sanitary practices and improving tree vigor. Essential steps include:

  • Pruning and destroying infected branches to reduce inoculum load.
  • Ensuring proper spacing to improve ventilation.
  • Avoiding excessive irrigation that wets the foliage.
  • Applying protective copper-based or systemic fungicides in severe cases.
Regular monitoring is vital for early detection and mitigation.
