Lophium mytilinum is an ascomycete fungus that acts primarily as a saprophyte but can exhibit parasitic behavior on weakened coniferous trees. It is frequently observed in forest ecosystems and nurseries, where it contributes to the degradation of foliage in stressed or poorly ventilated stands.

The fungus predominantly affects species of the genus Pinus. While healthy, vigorous trees are usually resistant, those growing in suboptimal conditions—such as shade, excessive moisture, or high plant density—become susceptible to colonization by this pathogen.

The characteristic sign of infection is the development of black, elongated fruiting bodies on the needles. These structures are laterally compressed and resemble small mussel shells, which is reflected in the species epithet. Affected needles transition from green to yellow and brown, leading to premature needle drop.

The life cycle and spread of Lophium mytilinum are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high relative humidity and lack of air circulation within the canopy. These conditions allow spores to germinate and infect needle tissue more effectively, particularly during wet seasons.

Management strategies focus on promoting forest hygiene and tree vigor. Key measures include:

  • Thinning dense stands to improve airflow and sunlight penetration.
  • Removing and destroying infected debris to reduce the local inoculum.
  • Applying fungicides during the growing season if the infection reaches a critical threshold.
  • Maintaining optimal soil drainage to reduce overall plant stress.
