Description
The fungus Lophodermella cerina is a specialized pathogen belonging to the Ascomycota division, known for causing needle cast disease in various pine species. By infecting the needles, the fungus disrupts the plant's metabolic processes, leading to chlorosis, premature needle drop, and a significant decrease in the overall vitality of the tree.
Susceptible hosts primarily include various species of pines, especially in dense forests and nursery environments. The disease is particularly detrimental to young, establishing trees, where a severe infection can stunt growth significantly and, in extreme cases, lead to the death of the saplings due to repeated defoliation and weakened defense systems.
The most visible symptoms occur on the needles, which transition from green to a distinct waxy yellow or light brown color as the fungal mycelium develops. Small, dark, fruit-like bodies called apothecia emerge on the surface of the infected needles, marking the stage of spore production, which facilitates further spread of the disease within the stand.
Environmental conditions play a decisive role in the disease cycle, with high humidity and prolonged rainfall acting as primary catalysts. Spores are disseminated via wind and water splashes during wet weather, allowing the fungus to infect healthy needles. Proper aeration and moisture control are essential to disrupt the spread of Lophodermella cerina in intensive pine plantations.
