The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Lophodermella conjuncta, which belongs to the group of Ascomycetes. It acts as a specialized pathogen that affects the needles of pine trees, leading to premature needle drop and significant decline in tree vitality.

The primary host for this pathogen is the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). While mature trees can tolerate minor infections, seedlings and saplings in nurseries are highly susceptible, often suffering from severe defoliation that impacts their survival and growth rates.

Symptoms typically appear in early summer as yellow spotting on current-year needles. As the season progresses, these spots expand, turning the needles into a brownish-grey color. By late summer or autumn, characteristic black, elongated fruit bodies (hysterothecia) develop on the needle surface, indicating the maturity of the fungal spores.

Prolonged periods of moisture, high humidity, and moderate temperatures provide optimal conditions for the germination and spread of spores. Stagnant air in dense plantations facilitates the transmission of the fungus from infected needles to healthy ones.
