Description
The disease is caused by the ascomycete fungus Lophodermella sulcigena, which is a major pathogen of pine trees. This fungus specializes in infecting current-year needles, leading to premature chlorosis and needle drop, significantly affecting the overall health and vitality of the host tree.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are various pine species, with Pinus sylvestris (Scots pine) being highly susceptible. The disease is particularly damaging to young pine stands, nursery seedlings, and Christmas tree plantations, where it can cause significant aesthetic and economic losses due to the rapid decline of foliage.
Initial symptoms appear in early summer as small yellow spots on the needles, which eventually expand and turn brown or reddish-brown. By autumn, elongated black fruiting bodies (hysterothecia) of the fungus become visible along the needles. Severely infected needles typically wither and fall from the tree the following spring.
The development and spread of Lophodermella sulcigena are heavily dependent on climatic conditions. Prolonged periods of moisture, frequent rain, and moderate temperatures provide ideal conditions for spore release and infection. Densely planted areas with poor air circulation are at the highest risk of severe outbreaks.
The economic impact of this needle cast involves reduced tree growth, loss of foliage vigor, and compromised tree health. Persistent infection year after year depletes the tree's energy reserves, making it more vulnerable to secondary attacks by bark beetles and other stressors, potentially leading to tree mortality.

Preventive measures include ensuring proper site drainage, maintaining adequate tree spacing to improve ventilation, and performing rigorous sanitation by removing infected litter. Chemical control involves the application of fungicides during the critical spore dispersal period in spring and early summer to protect new needle growth.
