Lophodermium needle cast of kauri is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Lophodermium agathidis. As a member of the Lophodermiaceae family, this fungus acts as a specialized parasite on coniferous trees. The disease is characterized by the infection of needles, which leads to necrotic lesions, impaired photosynthesis, and premature needle drop, ultimately affecting the overall vitality of the tree host.

The primary host for this pathogen is the Kauri tree (Agathis species), which holds significant ecological importance. The disease is particularly noted in regions where these species are cultivated or grow naturally. Younger trees and nursery seedlings are typically at higher risk of significant damage, as the microclimate within dense stands often facilitates the rapid spread of fungal spores.
