Host plants and distribution. The primary hosts for Lophodermium baculiferum are species of the fir genus (Abies). This disease is a significant concern in both nursery settings and forest plantations. Because it affects the photosynthetic tissue of the tree, it is particularly devastating for young saplings that are still establishing their root systems and crown density.

Symptoms and signs of infection. Infected needles typically change color from green to yellow, eventually turning reddish-brown or dark brown. A diagnostic feature is the appearance of small, elongated, dark-colored fruiting bodies (apothecia) on the surface of the needles. These structures are often visible as distinct lines and signify that the fungus is preparing to release spores into the environment.

Developmental conditions and impact. The fungus thrives in cool, wet environments with high atmospheric humidity. Prolonged rainfall and fog facilitate the discharge and dissemination of spores onto healthy needles. The impact of the disease is the premature shedding of needles, leading to thinning crowns, reduced vigor, and, in severe cases, the death of the tree due to persistent lack of foliage.

Management and prevention. Controlling Lophodermium baculiferum requires a multifaceted approach focused on sanitation and chemical intervention. Removing infected fallen needles from the base of the trees is crucial to reducing the inoculum source. Additionally, applying registered fungicides during the periods of spore dispersal can protect new growth and prevent the spread of the infection within the plantation or nursery.
