Pathogen and type of disease. The disease known as cedar lophodermium needle cast is caused by the ascomycete fungus Lophodermium cedrinum. It is a type of needle cast disease that specifically targets conifers. The fungus acts as a parasite, invading the needles and disrupting the plant's physiological processes, which often leads to significant photosynthetic reduction.

Affected host plants. The primary hosts for this pathogen are cedar trees and closely related pine species. While mature trees can be affected, the disease is particularly devastating in nurseries, where dense planting and high humidity create a favorable environment for the pathogen to thrive and spread rapidly among vulnerable young saplings.

Symptoms and signs of infestation. Initial symptoms include the appearance of yellow-brown lesions on the needles. As the infection progresses, the needles turn brown and wither. A distinctive sign of Lophodermium cedrinum is the presence of small, black, elongated fruiting bodies (apothecia) that erupt through the needle surface once the tissue dies.

Development and spread conditions. The development of the fungus is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly prolonged moisture and cool-to-moderate temperatures. The spores are primarily dispersed by wind and rain splashes. Sites with poor air circulation, such as enclosed nurseries or dense forest stands, are at the highest risk for severe outbreaks.

Harmfulness and protection measures. The primary harm caused by this disease is the premature shedding of needles, which leads to tree weakening, growth stagnation, and increased susceptibility to secondary pests. Effective control involves:

  • Sanitary pruning and removal of infected needles.
  • Application of copper-based fungicides or systemic chemical treatments.
  • Improving site sanitation and increasing spacing between trees.
  • Monitoring forest health during high-humidity seasons.
