Lophodermium exaridum is a fungal pathogen responsible for causing needle cast diseases in various coniferous species. It belongs to the order Rhytismatales and is recognized for its ability to significantly impact the health of pine trees by causing premature defoliation and weakening the overall vigor of the host plant.

The primary hosts of this pathogen include various species of pine. The fungus infects the needles, colonizing the internal tissues, which eventually leads to the disruption of photosynthetic activity. As the infection progresses, the foliage becomes chlorotic and eventually turns brown, causing the needles to drop earlier than their natural lifecycle dictates.

Typical symptoms involve the formation of brown necrotic spots on the needles, which eventually expand. During the reproductive stage, the fungus produces black, elongated fruiting bodies known as apothecia that rupture the epidermis of the needles.
