The disease primarily affects pines (Pinus genus). It is particularly problematic in nursery settings, plantation forests, and ornamental gardens where young, dense stands of trees provide a continuous supply of susceptible tissue for the fungal pathogen to colonize and spread.

Symptoms of the infection typically appear as discoloration of the needles, progressing from yellow to brown or reddish-brown. A distinct diagnostic feature is the presence of small, elongated black fruiting bodies (apothecia) that erupt through the needle surface, indicating that the fungus has reached its reproductive stage.

High humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures create an ideal environment for spore germination and infection.
