The host range primarily includes species such as Pinus roxburghii. The fungus infects needle tissues, utilizing them as a nutrient source, which interferes with the host's photosynthetic capabilities and overall physiological development during the growing season.

Symptoms of the infection typically appear as needle chlorosis, eventually progressing to necrosis and brown discoloration. A diagnostic sign of this disease is the development of black, elliptical apothecia on the needles, which emerge as the pathogen matures and prepares for spore dispersal.

The spread of the fungus is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly humidity and temperature. Periods of prolonged rainfall and mild temperatures are ideal for spore germination and colonization, facilitating rapid transmission within forest stands and among nursery stocks.
