As an ascomycetous fungus, it targets needles, leading to premature defoliation and severe stress in host plants. The fungus primarily affects various species of pine. Infection typically occurs through the stomata of the needles, where the fungal mycelium penetrates the tissues. As the infection progresses, the metabolic processes of the host are disrupted, eventually causing the needles to change color and drop prematurely, which significantly hinders the growth of the tree.
Symptoms are manifested by the discoloration of needles, which turn yellow and then reddish-brown.
