Description

The fungus Lophodermium melaleucum is a pathogenic ascomycete responsible for needle cast disease in various conifer species. The infection primarily targets the foliage, which interrupts photosynthesis and leads to premature needle shedding, potentially causing significant growth inhibition and structural decline of the host tree.

The primary hosts for this fungus include spruce species and several other conifers. It is frequently identified in nursery settings, ornamental landscapes, and dense forest plantations, where high plant density and specific environmental conditions facilitate the rapid spread of fungal spores between needles.

Clinical signs of the disease include the formation of yellowish to reddish-brown spots or bands on the needles. As the disease progresses, distinctive black, shiny, elongated apothecia (fruiting bodies) develop along the length of the infected needles. The needles eventually turn completely brown, wither, and fall, which is particularly evident in the lower sections of the tree crown.
