Description

Lophodermium molitoris is a species of ascomycetous fungus responsible for the needle cast disease in pine trees. This pathogen primarily targets the needles, leading to chlorosis, premature senescence, and defoliation. In nurseries and young plantations, the disease can cause significant economic losses by stunting the growth and reducing the aesthetic and ecological value of the trees.

The primary host for this fungus is the pine species, particularly Pinus sylvestris. The pathogen infects young needles during periods of high humidity and moderate temperatures. It is highly pervasive in densely populated stands where the microclimate remains humid, preventing the foliage from drying out after rainfall, which is a critical condition for fungal spore germination.

Clinical signs of infection are easily recognizable by the appearance of brown necrotic bands on the needles. As the fungus matures, small, black, elongated fruiting bodies (apothecia) develop on the needle surface. In advanced stages, the needles turn yellowish-brown and drop off prematurely, leaving the shoots bare and significantly weakening the tree's physiological state.

Disease spread is driven by the dispersal of ascospores through air currents during wet weather. A thick layer of leaf litter beneath the trees serves as a reservoir for the pathogen, allowing it to survive through the winter months and reinfect new needles in the following season. Effective management relies on breaking this life cycle by reducing inoculum pressure.
