Lophodermium needle cast, caused by the fungus Lophodermium neesii, belongs to a group of fungal diseases affecting conifers. It is a parasitic infection that targets various species of juniper (Juniperus), disrupting photosynthesis and leading to the premature death and shedding of needles.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are species within the Juniperus genus. The fungus is highly specialized, invading both young and mature needle tissues, which puts decorative landscape plantings and wild juniper stands at significant risk in temperate climate regions.
Symptoms and signs of infection
Initial symptoms appear as discoloration of the needles: they turn brown and dry out, yet often remain attached to the branches for a considerable time. Later, in late spring or early summer, specific fruiting bodies of the fungus (apothecia) form on the underside of the needles, appearing as narrow, black, shiny transverse lines or elongated spots.
Conditions for development and spread
The development of Lophodermium neesii is favored by high humidity, water stagnation within the canopy, and overcrowding of plants. Fungal spores are dispersed by air currents and rain splashes during wet periods, rapidly infecting healthy parts of the plant. The disease progresses most intensely in shaded areas with poor air circulation.

The harmful impact manifests as a weakened immune system, loss of ornamental value, and potential plant death in cases of severe infestation. Prevention requires maintaining proper spacing when planting, performing sanitary pruning of infected branches, and ensuring adequate drainage.
