Lophodermium needle cast is a significant fungal infection affecting various species of fir trees (Abies), caused by the pathogen Lophodermium nervisequium. This disease primarily attacks the foliage, leading to premature needle drop and potentially compromising the overall health and vigor of the host plant, especially in high-density plantations or nursery settings.

The fungus is host-specific to fir trees. It infects current-year needles during the growing season. The mycelium colonizes the internal tissues of the needles, which eventually disrupts their physiological function, leading to chlorosis and necrosis. The most significant impact is observed on young trees, where chronic infection can stunt growth and ruin the aesthetic value of the planting.

Early symptoms include the appearance of localized brown spots on the needles. As the fungus matures, characteristic elongated, black fruiting bodies (apothecia) develop along the midrib on the undersides of the needles. Subsequently, the infected needles turn brown, become brittle, and drop prematurely, leaving branches partially bare, which is a hallmark of the infection.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the disease cycle. Prolonged periods of cool, wet weather, high humidity, and poor air circulation within the canopy are ideal for spore dispersal and infection. Because the pathogen can overwinter in fallen needles, the debris acts as a primary inoculum source, ensuring the disease cycle repeats if sanitation measures are ignored.
