Lophodermium nitens is a fungal pathogen belonging to the class Ascomycetes, responsible for causing needle cast disease in various pine species. This fungus is specifically known for its impact on five-needled pines, leading to significant foliage loss. The primary hosts for this fungus include species of the Pinus genus. It poses the greatest threat to young pine plantations, nursery stock, and ornamental trees. The presence of the pathogen often goes unnoticed until the characteristic signs of infection manifest, making early detection a critical component of forest management.

The disease is marked by the development of glossy, black, elongated fruiting bodies (apothecia) on the needles. These structures are the distinct clinical sign of the infection.
