Description

Lophodermium piceae is a fungal pathogen responsible for a condition commonly known as needle cast in spruce trees. This disease disrupts the vital processes of the plant by infecting the needles, leading to their premature shedding. While it can affect mature trees, it is particularly detrimental to seedlings and young plantations, causing stunted growth and loss of photosynthetic capacity.

The primary hosts of this fungus are species within the genus Picea, especially Norway spruce. The pathogen specifically targets the needles, and its severity is often correlated with the physiological state of the host. Trees suffering from environmental stress, poor soil nutrition, or mechanical damage are far more likely to experience severe infection compared to vigorous, well-maintained trees.

The most visible symptoms include chlorosis and subsequent necrosis of the needles. Initially, the needles turn pale yellow, then transition to a distinct brown or reddish-brown color before falling from the branch. A definitive sign of Lophodermium piceae is the presence of small, elongated, black fruiting bodies (apothecia) scattered along the underside of the infected needles, which are often visible even after the needles have fallen.

The spread of the fungus is highly dependent on humidity and temperature. The spores are dispersed by rain splashes and wind, infecting healthy needles during periods of prolonged moisture and moderate temperatures. Dense, poorly ventilated stands provide an ideal microclimate for the pathogen to thrive, as trapped humidity keeps the foliage wet for longer periods, facilitating spore germination.

Managing the disease requires a combination of sanitation and chemical interventions. It is crucial to remove and destroy infected plant debris, as this serves as a reservoir for spores in subsequent seasons. Thinning out canopy density helps to lower humidity levels, which effectively inhibits the spread of the fungus. When necessary, prophylactic fungicide sprays applied during the early growth stages can significantly reduce the infection pressure.
