Description

Lophodermium needle cast is a significant fungal disease caused by the pathogen Lophodermium pinastri. It predominantly affects various species of pine trees, particularly the Scots pine. The disease is a major concern for forest nurseries and young forest plantations, where it can cause extensive needle drop and significant growth reduction or plant mortality.

The fungus overwinters as mycelium and fruiting bodies (apothecia) on infected fallen needles. During favorable conditions, such as wet weather and moderate temperatures, the fungus releases spores into the air. These spores land on healthy needles, germinate, and penetrate the host tissue, eventually establishing an internal fungal colony that destroys the needle's photosynthetic capabilities.

Symptoms initially appear as yellow spots or mottling on the needles, which eventually turn reddish-brown. As the disease progresses, distinctive black, transverse lines become visible on the dead foliage. By spring, small, black, oval-shaped fruiting bodies emerge on the needle surfaces. The infected needles fall prematurely, leaving branches bare and weakening the overall health of the tree.

The development and spread of Lophodermium pinastri are heavily dependent on environmental factors. High humidity, frequent fog, and mild, damp autumns are ideal for fungal propagation. Dense planting layouts that prevent airflow exacerbate the problem, allowing the humidity levels within the canopy to remain consistently high, which is perfect for infection cycles.
