Description
The causative agent of the disease is the ascomycete fungus Lophodermium seditiosum, which is recognized as a significant pathogen responsible for severe cases of pine needle cast. This fungus causes premature browning and shedding of needles, which fundamentally impairs the photosynthetic capacity of the tree.
The primary host for this pathogen is the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), with young plantations and nursery seedlings being most susceptible to the infection. Trees in the 1 to 15-year age range are particularly vulnerable, often suffering from reduced growth rates and significant needle loss during epidemic years.
Symptoms typically become visible in the spring, starting with chlorosis of the needles, which eventually turn reddish-brown and fall off. A diagnostic feature is the appearance of small, black, football-shaped fruiting bodies known as apothecia, which emerge on the dead needles in rows, signaling the completion of the fungal life cycle.
Development and spread of the fungus are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity, fog, and moderate temperatures throughout the summer and autumn months. Airborne ascospores are disseminated by wind and rain, which facilitates rapid transmission within dense pine stands or nurseries.
Management strategies focus on silvicultural practices such as maintaining proper plant spacing to improve air circulation and sanitation by removing infected plant debris. In nursery settings, preventative application of fungicides during the spore release period is critical to mitigate the risk of infection and protect the health of young seedlings.
