Description

The causative agent of this disease is the ascomycete fungus Lophodermium vagulum, which belongs to the group of pathogens causing needle cast in conifers. This fungus is a specialized parasite that primarily targets young pine stands, particularly those in nursery environments where high density facilitates rapid spread.

Host plants are mainly species within the genus Pinus, with Scots pine being particularly susceptible. The disease causes significant physiological stress to the host, leading to premature needle drop, reduced annual growth increments, and in severe cases, the decline of entire seedlings or young trees.

Diagnosis is based on visual examination of the needles. Initially, the tissue shows yellowish or brown discoloration, which later turns necrotic. The diagnostic feature of Lophodermium vagulum is the development of thin, black, transverse lines across the needles, which represent the fruiting bodies of the fungus (apothecia).

Environmental factors play a crucial role in disease epidemiology. The fungus thrives in high-humidity conditions, particularly during mild spring and summer weather. Spores are disseminated by wind and splashing rain, rapidly infecting new needles in dense, poorly ventilated plantation blocks where microclimates remain stagnant.
