Description

Lophomerum is a genus of ascomycete fungi responsible for a specific type of needle cast disease that affects conifers, particularly spruce species. This fungal infection results in premature defoliation and can significantly impair the physiological health and aesthetic appearance of young trees, especially in nursery settings.

The disease is caused by species of the Lophomerum fungus, which act as biotrophs by colonizing the needle tissues. As the infection progresses, the mycelium penetrates the interior of the needles, eventually forming specialized fruiting structures known as apothecia that emerge through the leaf surface to release spores.

Typical symptoms of Lophomerum include the yellowing and subsequent browning of needles, followed by premature dropping. The most reliable diagnostic feature is the presence of small, elongated, black, linear-shaped fruiting bodies erupting through the epidermis of the affected needles during late summer or autumn.

Disease development is heavily favored by environmental factors such as prolonged periods of leaf wetness, high humidity, and poor air circulation. These conditions allow spores to successfully germinate and penetrate the host tissue. Dense planting densities in forest nurseries provide an ideal microclimate for the rapid spread of the pathogen.

Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical controls. Key preventive and remedial strategies include:

  • Regular removal and destruction of fallen needles to reduce the primary inoculum.
  • Improving air circulation through proper pruning and spacing of coniferous trees.
  • Application of protective fungicides during periods of high infection risk, focusing on early needle development.
  • Monitoring nursery stocks regularly for early signs of needle discolouration.
