Description
Lophomerum ponticum is a fungal pathogen that primarily infects various spruce species (Picea). As a cause of needle cast disease, it disrupts the tree's photosynthetic capacity by attacking the needles, leading to premature needle drop and long-term decline in tree health.
The primary clinical signs of the disease include chlorosis and necrosis of the previous year's needles. Infected needles initially show yellow spotting which progresses to a brown or reddish-brown coloration. As the fungus completes its life cycle, fruiting bodies emerge on the needle surface, and the foliage eventually drops, leaving branches bare, particularly in the lower canopy.
The pathogen thrives in conditions characterized by high humidity, prolonged fog, and mild temperatures. Rain splash and wind are the primary vectors for spore dispersal within the canopy. The disease is particularly prevalent in dense, unmanaged stands where moisture remains trapped on needles for extended periods, providing an ideal environment for spore germination.
The detrimental impact of Lophomerum ponticum is observed in the significant reduction of tree vigor. Continuous loss of needles forces the tree to utilize its carbohydrate reserves, leading to stunted growth. Weakened trees become highly susceptible to secondary attacks from bark beetles and pathogens causing stem rots, which may eventually lead to tree mortality.
Effective management and prevention strategies involve both cultural and chemical control measures. Sanitation is crucial: clearing away fallen debris helps reduce the inoculum load for the following season. Pruning diseased branches improves air circulation. Fungicide applications containing copper or specific systemic fungicides, when applied during the spring growth flush, can effectively mitigate infection pressure.
