Description

Loreleia is a specific fungal plant disease caused by representatives of the genus Loreleia. This pathogen belongs to the group of basidial fungi and most often affects herbaceous plants under conditions of high humidity. The disease is characterized by the gradual suppression of metabolic processes in the host's tissues, which leads to the deformation of organs and a decrease in the crop's productivity.

The causative agent of the disease is able to persist for a long time in soil residues or infected plant tissues in the form of mycelium. The type of disease is classified as necrosis-spotted, in which the fungus penetrates the intercellular space, destroying cell bonds and causing necrosis of specific areas of the leaf or stem. The pathogen is a facultative parasite, capable of switching to a saprotrophic lifestyle in the absence of a primary host.

The main crops susceptible to infection by this fungus are ornamental species and certain vegetable plants grown in open or protected ground. Young seedlings are particularly vulnerable during the period of intense growth when the plant's immune system is not yet sufficiently developed to resist invasion. The infection is most often localized on the leaves, gradually spreading to petioles and stems.

Symptoms of the disease manifest as the appearance of characteristic light spots with a dark border, which eventually merge into large areas of necrosis. A thin layer of sporulation forms on the surface of the affected areas under high air humidity. Infected plants show chlorosis, premature leaf drop, and stunted growth, which in critical cases leads to the complete death of the plant.

The development of the disease is closely related to agro-climatic conditions: the optimal environment for the spread of spores is a moderate temperature between +18 and +24°C and excessive air humidity. Stagnant water in the root zone or dense plantings contribute to the rapid spread of infection through spores carried by wind, raindrops, or tools. Prevention includes the use of resistant varieties, crop rotation, and systemic fungicide treatment at the first signs of damage.
