Loxospora elatina is a crustose lichen species within the Loxosporaceae family. In the context of forestry, it is recognized as an epiphytic organism that colonizes the bark of coniferous trees. Unlike aggressive fungal pathogens, this lichen typically occupies a niche on stable, mature bark surfaces where it thrives in symbiotic balance with the host tree's environment.
The primary hosts for Loxospora elatina are coniferous species, particularly fir (Abies) and spruce (Picea). It is frequently found in old-growth forests where a cool, humid microclimate persists. The lichen prefers the rough bark of trunks and large branches, utilizing the crevices to establish its thallus and access trace nutrients present in surface runoff.
Symptoms of colonization are identified by the presence of a crustose thallus, which appears as a grayish-white to greenish-yellow coating on the bark. The most distinct reproductive structures are the apothecia, featuring characteristic reddish-brown or orange discs. These structures are often scattered across the surface of the thallus and are easily visible upon close inspection of the tree bark.

However, in extremely high densities, it may retain moisture against the bark, potentially creating a microhabitat for secondary pests or encouraging minor superficial bark degradation.
