Lulworthia is a genus of marine ascomycete fungi that exists primarily within marine ecosystems. While many marine fungi are decomposers, Lulworthia species are known to act as pathogens that can negatively impact the health and vitality of seagrasses, contributing to the decline of vital coastal vegetation.
The disease is caused by fungi belonging to the family Lulworthiaceae. As an infectious mycological agent, Lulworthia targets the structural tissues of marine plants, employing enzymatic degradation to penetrate the plant epidermis and consume nutrients, which compromises the integrity of the host organism.
Key host plants include various species of seagrasses, such as those within the Zosteraceae family. These plants are essential for maintaining healthy coastal habitats, carbon sequestration, and sediment stabilization; thus, the proliferation of this fungus can have significant ecological consequences.
