The pestle-shaped puffball (Lycoperdon excipuliforme) is a saprotrophic fungus primarily known for its role in organic matter decomposition. It is not a plant pathogen and does not infect living crops, though it often appears in agricultural settings characterized by high soil organic content and consistent humidity.

The fungus thrives in areas with rich humus, decaying wood, and moist environments. In an agricultural context, its growth is often observed in orchards or garden beds where mulching materials or compost have not fully broken down. It functions by breaking down complex organic molecules into simpler nutrients.

While the fungus itself does not cause diseases in plants, its presence is a biological indicator. It signals that the soil environment has significant moisture levels and an abundance of raw organic debris. For many farmers, this serves as an alert to evaluate the decomposition status of their soil amendments.

Symptoms of its presence include the emergence of distinct, tall, pestle-shaped fruiting bodies. While they cause no harm to crop tissues, high concentrations of mycelium in a greenhouse or container-grown system may compete with young seedlings for surface moisture or indicate poor sanitation protocols in the soil medium.

Control and management are rarely necessary for plant health, but for aesthetic and sanitation reasons, removal of fruiting bodies before spore release is recommended. Ensuring proper soil aeration, preventing waterlogging, and using well-composted organic material will naturally reduce the frequency of colonization by this fungus.
