Description

The genus Lyophyllum comprises fungi that, in specific environmental contexts, act as pathogens responsible for root rot in various woody plants. While many species are saprotrophic, certain members of this genus can colonize living root systems, leading to significant physiological decline and degradation of vascular tissues.

The disease is caused by the fungal mycelium colonizing the root cortex and xylem. It is classified as a destructive root rot, which gradually consumes the structural integrity of the plant's underground organs, severely limiting the uptake of water and essential mineral nutrients.

This pathogen primarily affects perennial woody species, including conifers and deciduous trees in forest and landscape settings. Horticultural crops may also be at risk if planted in areas with high levels of decaying wood debris or poor soil drainage, where the fungal inoculum is abundant.

Visible symptoms often include canopy thinning, premature yellowing, and stunted growth. The progression of the disease is indicated by the softening and necrosis of the root collar and primary roots, often accompanied by the presence of white, fan-shaped mycelial mats under the bark of the roots.

Management of Lyophyllum infections requires an integrated approach. Essential measures include:

  • Removal of infected host plants and root stumps to reduce inoculum sources.
  • Improvement of soil drainage to prevent anaerobic conditions.
  • Avoiding mechanical damage to tree roots during site maintenance.
  • Application of preventative fungicides in high-risk zones.
