It is critical to clarify that Macrocystis pyrifera, commonly known as giant kelp, is absolutely not a plant disease or a pathogenic agent. It is a species of large brown algae that thrives in the temperate coastal oceans of the world, creating complex underwater forests that provide essential habitats for marine biodiversity.

The biology of this organism is remarkable due to its rapid growth rate, which can reach nearly half a meter per day under ideal conditions. Its body structure consists of a holdfast that secures it to rocky substrates, stipes, and flat, leafy blades with gas-filled bladders (pneumatocysts) that keep the blades near the surface to maximize sunlight absorption for photosynthesis.

In the context of agriculture and horticulture, giant kelp is highly valued as a resource. Extracts derived from these algae are widely used as bio-stimulants, soil conditioners, and liquid fertilizers. They contain plant hormones, micro-nutrients, and alginates that improve soil structure and help terrestrial crops develop robust root systems and increase resilience against drought and frost.

Environmental conditions for the development of giant kelp are specific and include cold water rich in nutrients, constant water movement, and a stable rocky substrate. Changes in water temperature, such as those caused by climate change, can severely limit its growth and survival, leading to a significant loss of coastal productivity.

Since the giant kelp is a beneficial biological resource, standard agricultural "control" measures are not applicable. Instead, sustainable management practices focus on conservation and responsible mariculture. These efforts include:

  • monitoring seawater quality;
  • restricting industrial harvesting;
  • restoration of kelp beds in degraded coastal areas.
